Smart Cities: Dr. Hassan Radoine on the true smartness of African cities

In this episode, Dr. Hassan Radoine presents his thoughts on a ‘smart city’ concept. What surprises him is that people who endeavor to define what a smart city is often link it to fragmented solutions focusing solely on technological innovations. Indeed, technologies can solve many problems related to mobility, transportation, waste management, digital connectivity, and more, but they must also respond to the needs of citizens.

According to Dr. Hassan Radoine, the idea of a city’s smartness transcends how one can monitor, observe, and guide how the entire system works. That is why experts and scholars advocate for an African smart city that can monitor its metropolitan fabric to optimize the usage of resources and infrastructures, conserve the environment, and strengthen connectivity among different social groups.

The smartness of a city is no longer gauged by heavy infrastructure, Dr. Hassan stressed, but rather by light infrastructure via the digital revolution, which makes cities lighter, much more resilient, and even more sustainable.
