GreenChemAfrica: Forging the Future of Sustainable Science in Africa
What if chemistry could change the continent?
In a world increasingly affected by climate change and environmental degradation, the GreenChemAfrica program offered more than just training—it planted seeds for a continental movement. From theoretical foundations to real-world solutions, this initiative empowered young African scientists to lead the way toward greener, smarter, and more ethical chemistry practices.

The GreenChemAfrica program, developed through a collaboration between SUSMAT-RC, the Executive Education STH, and IUPAC, and with the support of the Royal Society of Chemistry, IUPAC, and the ACS Green Chemistry Institute, has been successfully completed at UM6P. This pioneering pan-African initiative trained a new generation of scientists committed to advancing sustainable chemistry, exploring the foundations of green chemistry, its twelve guiding principles, and practical applications to address today’s environmental challenges.
Beyond academic learning, GreenChemAfrica fostered a deep reflection on the role of science in driving sustainable transformation across Africa, emphasizing innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and scientific leadership. The graduation ceremony, held last week, celebrated the commitment, achievements, and vision of the participants, marking a major milestone in building a vibrant pan-African scientific community focused on impact.
We extend our sincere thanks to all those who contributed to the success of this program through their dedication, involvement, and support.
