As Morocco advances its integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into its healthcare system, cybersecurity has emerged as a significant concern, experts warn.
Rachid El Fatimy, director of the Smart Health Care City, dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, and director of the Center for Doctoral Studies, emphasized the need for stronger data security measures.
While Morocco has made strides in implementing digital systems in hospitals and clinics, gaps remain in securing medical records and ensuring proper data storage, he told Hespress English.
“AI can revolutionize healthcare, but its success depends not only on advanced technology but also on training professionals—including doctors, nurses, and paramedical staff—in data management and information system utilization,” El Fatimy said.
AI’s Potential in Addressing Medical Staff Shortages
Beyond cybersecurity, AI could play a crucial role in alleviating Morocco’s healthcare staffing shortages. The country currently seeks 48,000 additional doctors and 100,000 nurses, according to El Fatimy. He stressed that AI should benefit rural areas, not just major cities, by improving access to medical expertise through digital platforms.
One potential advantage is reducing the administrative burden on doctors. “AI will help minimize the time medical professionals spend recording patient data,” he said. However, he clarified that AI would not replace human decision-making in medical care due to regulatory restrictions.
