Unveiling the Future of Agriculture: The Power of Carbon Farming
Carbon farming practices such as cover cropping, no-till, agroforestry, and composting are focused on reducing greenhouse gases through sustainable soil management and health enhancement. All these practices play a significant role in mitigating climate change through the sequestration of carbon in soils and thus making agriculture more environmentally friendly.
It is where at the experimental farm sustainability and innovation converge at Benguerir’s University Mohammed VI Polytechnic (UM6P). Here, a team of professionals, led by Sara Hrar who is the Senior Lead Carbon Desk, is developing an MRV system for soil carbon sequestration. The project is a collaboration with UM6P’s College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences and aims to revolutionize African agriculture.
By providing exposure to carbon markets and promoting ethical and sustainable farming, this initiative seeks to enable African farmers. The project is also blessed with the expertise of Ngonidzashe Chirinda, a world-known climate action champion and professor of Sustainable Tropical Agriculture at UM6P. His input highlights the importance of healthy soils and sequestering carbon in sustainable land management.
To learn more about these innovative techniques of carbon farming and how they are set to revolutionize African agriculture, watch the video with Sara Hrar and Ngonidzashe Chirinda. This learning resource is full of information on how to enhance soil fertility, promote green land management, and how carbon farming can fight climate challenges.
