Science Week 2025 kicked off to a standing ovation at University Mohammed VI Polytechnic under the theme ‘Shaping the Future’. This unique event brings together researchers, experts, and entrepreneurs to discuss the challenges of artificial intelligence, sustainable agriculture, and innovation. At the heart of the discussions is Africa’s role as a key player in the global scientific landscape.
At the official opening, Hisham Al-Habti, President of the Amsterdam University of Science and Technology, underlined the importance of this science week: “Science Week is a space
where we rethink the world of tomorrow, where science and innovation are at the service of human progress and the preservation of our environment. Africa has a key role to play.
This event is an ideal opportunity for African scientists to share their ideas and contribute to the global knowledge base. A number of innovations will be presented, highlighting the progress made by the continent.
Artificial intelligence, sustainable agriculture and innovation
Artificial intelligence (AI) takes center stage at this year’s event, particularly for its applications in health, education, and the economy. Sustainable agriculture, a crucial issue for global food security, is also at the heart of the discussions. Researchers are exploring solutions in agro-ecology and natural resource management.
Innovation is another strong pillar of this Science Week. A competition entitled “From Idea to Market” enables students to transform their ideas into concrete projects. In addition, a Science Village is showcasing the research being carried out at UM6P, illustrating the continent’s capacity to respond to contemporary scientific challenges.
Restoring confidence in science
While this week highlights technological advances, it also poses a crucial question: is confidence in science in decline? Fouad Laroui, Scientific Director of the event, warns against the rise of relativism and “alternative facts.”It is essential to restore confidence in science and to affirm its indispensable role in the development of societies,” he said.
The UM6P, a rapidly expanding scientific hub
The UM6P is confirming its status as a benchmark scientific center. Amina Lahbabi, the university’s director of communications, announced a number of strategic projects, including the forthcoming opening of a chemistry centre in Mazagan and the UM6P’s international expansion, with plans to set up in the United States. In addition, the construction of a university hospital center in Benguerir will strengthen the university’s social impact.
Science Week 2025 thus illustrates UM6P’s commitment to promoting research, innovation, and sustainable development while affirming Africa’s place in the global scientific landscape.
