Prof. Rachid Guerraoui Receives the Jean-Claude Laprie Award for Work in Dependable Computing

At University Mohammed VI Polytechnic, scientific excellence is measured not only by breakthrough ideas but by the lasting influence those ideas have on global research. This year, Professor Rachid Guerraoui has been honored with the Jean-Claude Laprie Award, one of the most respected distinctions in the field of dependable computing. The award recognizes research papers that have significantly shaped the theory or practice of building reliable, fault-tolerant computing systems—an area at the core of today’s distributed technologies.

Prof. Guerraoui received the award for the impactful paper “Lightweight Probabilistic Broadcast,” published in the Proceedings of the 2001 International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks. Co-authored with Patrick Eugster, Sidath Handurukande, Petr Kouznetsov, and Anne-Marie Kermarrec, the study introduced a transformative idea:

The first fully decentralized epidemic (or gossip-based) broadcast protocol where no node relies on global system knowledge.

This elegant and efficient approach has influenced how modern distributed systems communicate, scale, and maintain resilience—foundations essential to cloud infrastructures, peer-to-peer networks, blockchain technologies, and large-scale digital ecosystems.

The Jean-Claude Laprie Award is reserved for research that withstands the test of time—papers whose insights continue to inspire solutions decades after publication. Prof. Guerraoui’s work exemplifies this legacy, demonstrating how strong theory can reshape real-world systems and remain relevant as computing evolves.

His recognition highlights the depth of expertise and innovation present at UM6P, where faculty contribute to cutting-edge research that resonates globally.

Prof. Guerraoui’s distinction reinforces UM6P’s mission to nurture a community of researchers whose work accelerates technological progress and addresses complex societal challenges. From dependable computing to distributed algorithms, UM6P fosters an environment where bold ideas are encouraged and impactful research thrives.

Through such achievements, UM6P continues to strengthen Morocco’s presence in international scientific dialogues and position the University as a hub for advanced digital research.

The Jean-Claude Laprie Award not only honors Prof. Rachid Guerraoui’s remarkable contribution to dependable computing—it celebrates the spirit of innovation that drives UM6P researchers to push boundaries and design systems that power the digital world.
