Global leaders gather in Benguerir to shape the future of fertilizers and food security
From 16 to 18 September, Université Mohammed VI Polytechnique (UM6P), in partnership with OCP Group, hosted the 37th AFA Technical Conference and Exhibition on its Benguerir campus. Centered on the theme “Emerging Technologies in the Fertilizer Industry: Balancing Productivity and Environmental Stewardship,” the event highlighted how innovation can drive a more sustainable agricultural future.
A Meeting Point for Global Expertise
With over 1,000 participants from 40+ countries, the AFA conference brought together researchers, industry leaders, and policy actors. Discussions focused on the entire fertilizer value chain—nitrogen, phosphate, and potash—with particular attention to:
- Enhancing process efficiency,
- Accelerating digital transformation,
- Advancing environmental sustainability.
By welcoming this gathering, UM6P reaffirmed its role as a hub where science, industry, and education converge to address global challenges.
Morocco’s Strategic Role
At the heart of the conversations was Morocco’s unique position as home to nearly 70% of the world’s phosphate reserves. Beyond resources, participants recognized the importance of research and education in driving sustainable solutions to ensure long-term food security.

During the closing ceremony, UM6P and OCP Group received recognition from AFA for their contribution to the fertilizer sector and for supporting the success of this global event. The acknowledgment reflects the University’s dedication to fostering collaboration, innovation, and sustainability in agriculture.
